The Science: Managing the Business

Evidence of Growth:  A nurse leader requires broad business management and patient care knowledge. By developing skills in financial analysis, operations management, leadership development, performance measures, and business management, nurse leaders are equipped to be involved in the decision-making process; furthermore, they can analyze industry factors such as financial impact, strategic management, and human resource management.

Compentency Examples:

Plans for Continued Growth:  To increase my knowledge in business management, I will be enrolling in continuing education classes that deal with financial, operations, and strategic management. Additionally, identify and learn from an astute mentor in these areas.

2

The Art: Leading the People

Evidence of Growth:  The art of leadership requires advanced practice nurses to advocate for their patients and team members' fundamental needs and anticipated changes. They must influence various groups of people by harnessing their skills and allowing them to grow and develop collaboratively while shaping a diverse and inclusive workplace. The knowledge gained, skills attained through the University of Mary MSN/MBA Dual Degree in Healthcare Administration program, and my clinical experience have helped develop my leadership style and application of influencing people.

Compentency Examples:

Plans for Continued Growth: I will work on becoming a servant leader by continuing to accomplish the objectives of emotional intelligence and using the skills and knowledge gained through my coursework to influence team members and create a positive work culture.

3

The Leader Within: Creating the Leader Within Yourself

Evidence of Growth:  Through reflection, leaders can develop confidence and strategies to create the core values to improve their leadership style. The MBA/MSN Dual Degree in Healthcare Administration at the University of Mary helped me become self-aware and allowed me to self-reflect, allowing me to discover my strengths and weaknesses; therefore, allowing me to grow.

Compentency Example:

Plans for Continued Growth:  I was challenged to construct a log and narrative of my leadership experience during my clinical practice. I will revisit this log to reflect on my growth and development as a nurse leader. I will challenge myself to create new metrics on my performance level to recognize channels and strategies to continue evolving as an advanced practice nurse and leader.
